Author Interview: Ruan Willow

Next up in my series of interviews with authors from He Will Obey is Ruan Willow. Ruan is the author of the short story Harley’s Peeping Punishment.

What got you into writing erotica?

First off, Ruan Willow is my pen name for all things erotica.

Well, I’ve written on and off my whole life, but I really got serious about all things writing about four years ago. It was a career shift for me to move into, at first on a very slow basis. I started a nonfiction blog under my real name, which I still maintain. I have also been lucky enough to get multiple nonfiction publications accepted across the internet on several big websites. I also began working on a book I had started years ago. I finished that book and began to pitch it to agents. Then I wrote a second book which was spurred on by Twitter’s writing community challenge of NaNoWriMo. That November I wrote over 30,000 words and within the next month I had finished my second book. It was a romance, and I was very fortunate to receive a publishing contract for it the next month. The publisher offered me a contract for my third book and a verbal for a fourth (which I lost due to COVID sadly). However, there was something lurking in me though to push further than romance and as time went on, I was bursting at the seems to try erotica. I started my Twitter account RaunchyIs as a total experiment into all things erotica. It took off so well that it launched me into created an erotic short story website, my audio erotica YouTube channel, and to submitting erotic stories to various places, which I did get accepted much to my extreme pleasure. I now am preparing to launch a podcast. Meanwhile, I’ve still got my hand in all the writing and books I have going on under my real name. It’s a lot and I maintain about 20 social media accounts as well.

What have you learned by reading and writing erotica? Any sex tips?

I have always been a very open-minded person, but that aspect of my personality has soared blissfully even more since starting to write erotica. Writing erotica and being in the Twitter erotic/sexual community has definitely exposed me to new sexual things. I find that to be a beneficial thing both personally sexually and as a writer of erotica. I don’t offend easily so that helps too. My mind can go so many places and I’m definitely a switch so I can go sub or I can go Domme.

Sex tips. Well, I’d say you don’t know if you like something or not until you’ve tried it. One never knows how they will react until they are in a situation, or who they could become in role play. So, why not try it at least once? Being open-minded is the best way to be when it comes to sex. Being afraid is okay too, as long as the person you are with has appropriately gained and is truly worthy of your trust.

How realistic are your stories, and are the experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

My stories are a mixture of things I’ve done, things I want to do, and as manifestations of my imagination. I think this is totally normal. The common advice of write what you know is true, but also write what you imagine, what you fantasize, what you dream up. I always bring up the example of Stephen King. He’s a master writer, unmatched, unparalled in modern times hands down. But he’s not a serial murderer, psychopath, or a monster, but he writes as one. All. The. Time. So I don’t think an author has to have personally experienced all they write about, but they have to have a damn good imagination to bring it to life so it seems to the reader as if the writer/author knows exactly what they are talking about. This is also where research comes in. Good research can allow a writer to write accurately, succinctly, and believably. Also, another way to view this is to think of sci-fi/fantasy writers. They couldn’t have experienced what they are writing about because it literally doesn’t exist. My bottom line is to write what I know, but even better, write what my brain can imagine. Therein lies the exquisite intricacies of the fertile brain of a writer. That’s the gold. If you can dream it up, you can write it if you pay attention to the detail of that fantasy and make it come alive.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I’m constantly reading books. I’m reading three right now. I read for my author friends to give feedback and reviews as well. I’m still reading He Will Obey, and I’ve really enjoyed the diversity of voices and writing in the book. It’s quite an enjoyable read to have so many different erotic brains that have deliciously spilled their brains into the stories. It’s really an erotic scrumptious ride to get glimpses into the brains of so many erotica authors all in one book.

What do you like to do besides write?

I love to cook and bake. I enjoy making up recipes too. I love to read of course, I can never get enough time to read. I’d read constantly if I could. I can never read one book at a time and find myself amidst three to four at once always. I enjoy working out and spending time with family/friends/pets. I adore animals so to me my pets are family. I love being outside. I have an ongoing love affair with dark chocolate and all types of wine—that aren’t sweet.

What are you working on now? Are there any links you’d like to share from past, current or future projects?

I have an erotic book I wrote and shelved. I like to let it sit for a bit and then go back and revise it. I’m also working on a short story with an editor at a publisher and I’m so hoping it will work out where they offer me a publishing contract. I will continue to write short stories for my website, for other websites, and continue to work on expanding my erotica using audio, including the new endeavor I’m embarking on in the podcast.

I have a short story on Literotica about swingers here:
